Sciatica is not actually a diagnosis – it is a set of symptoms including pain caused by compression or irritation of one of five spinal nerve roots, or by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerves. Pain can be felt in the lower back, buttocks, or parts of the leg and foot. Typically, symptoms such as numbness, muscular weakness, pins and needles, tingling, or difficulty of movement can be experienced in one side of the body. Sciatica can be caused by many different causes, so chiropractic treatment will vary based upon the reason for the symptoms.
Sciatica is generally caused by the compression of lumbar nerves L4 or L5, the sacral nerves S1, S2, or S3, or the sciatic nerve itself. Sometimes it is caused by the compression of a dorsal nerve root, which is considered a lumbar radiculopathy – this can occur as a result of a spinal disc bulge.
Chiropractic Sciatica Relief
Many sciatica sufferers have experienced dramatic relief after chiropractic care – some studies have shown patients to find more relief from chiropractic care than from pain injections or surgery.
